Costa Coffee

BRIEF

Designed a fun campaign for a mobile Costa Coffee van that was cruising all around the Lake District!

The main goal was to let locals and tourists know exactly where the van was heading next. I created a mix of social media posts and quick print assets featuring clear schedules and "we're heading your way!" location announcements. The final designs had a great summer road-trip vibe while keeping everything locked into Costa's official brand look.

CHALLENGE

The real test here was capturing that adventurous, "on-the-road" road trip theme in a way that looked incredibly appealing but still professional. It was a fine line to walk because the graphics needed to feel fun, mobile, and outdoorsy to match the Lake District backdrop, but they couldn't become so cluttered that they breached Costa's clean, strict corporate brand guidelines. The challenge was finding that perfect balance where the design felt casual and inviting, yet remained instantly recognizable as a premium Costa campaign.

SOLUTION:

The Costa Van

To solve this, I used some clean Photoshop work to literally place the Costa van right into different iconic spots around the Lake District. By blending the van seamlessly into these beautiful local backdrops, the visuals instantly told the story of the road trip. This gave the graphics that perfect, authentic scenic vibe while letting Costa's classic branding stand out naturally against the scenery.

RESULTS

The targeted social media campaign successfully generated significant regional awareness and high engagement levels online. By leveraging distinct, localized visuals, the posts effectively captured the target audience's attention, ensuring the van's rolling schedule and location drops were widely communicated. This maximized visibility across key demographics, driving consistent footfall and strong turnouts at every tour stop throughout the Lake District.

BRIEF

I got to work on a super fun project creating a digital interactive Advent Calendar for Costa Coffee! The idea was for customers to jump onto the desktop or mobile app, tap on the day’s number, and instantly unlock a special festive deal. My job was to design all the separate visual pieces and assets so the developers could easily animate them and bring the app to life. On top of that, I also created all the social media posts and marketing bits to get everyone hyped and buzzing about it online.

CHALLENGE

Honestly, the biggest challenge was just the sheer scale of the execution. Designing twenty-four individual days of unique assets—plus all the matching social media and marketing graphics—meant managing a massive amount of deliverables. Every single little asset had to be perfectly separated, layered, and prepared so the developers could animate them smoothly without any hitches, all while keeping the festive vibe fresh across both the app and socials.

To nail the execution, I started by exploring a bunch of different creative directions to see what clicked best with the client. I pitched a mix of styles, ranging from a classic, cozy advent calendar look to a neat, cup-themed design. I even mocked up a super unique concept where a brand-new object would pop onto the screen every single day to build up a festive scene.

Once we locked in the winning theme, I focused on building the assets to be incredibly organized. By keeping every piece layered and cleanly sliced, the developers had exactly what they needed to animate the user interface smoothly, while I adapted the look for the daily social media rollouts.

FINAL

We ended up choosing a super cozy "presents under the tree" theme. The idea was that users would spot the gift box with that day's number on it, tap it, and an animation would pop up to reveal the deal.

RESULT

The structured asset deployment resulted in a highly efficient development lifecycle, enabling the interactive experience to launch on schedule across both mobile and desktop platforms. The intuitive, gamified user interface successfully maintained high customer retention throughout the twenty-four-day period. Backed by a cohesive social media strategy, the campaign drove consistent daily application traffic, elevated user engagement, and delivered strong conversion rates for the seasonal promotional offers.

Event Project Campaigns

A hyper-local social media campaign designed to drive event-goers into the town’s Costa Coffee by positioning the store as the perfect companion to the local event. By creating agile, town-specific creative assets, the campaign intercepts local foot traffic and humanizes the national brand—proving that Costa isn't just a corporate chain, but a proud, active member of the local community where people can refuel, recharge, and escape the festival crowds.

BRIEF

Dickensian Festival

The Ulverston Dickensian Festival is a massive annual winter event that transforms the Lake District market town into a Victorian wonderland. Thousands of locals and tourists gather to step back in time, filling the historic, cobbled streets for festive market stalls, brass bands, and massive period-costume parades.

Whitehaven Pride

The festival features a colourful Pride parade through the town, a massive free outdoor music arena, a silent disco, and rows of local food vendors and community stalls. Organized by the volunteer-led group Proud and Diverse Cumbria, it draws crowds of up to 10,000 people to the historic coastal town.

By The Sea

Co-curated by HemingwayDesign and set against the iconic backdrop of the 1930s Midland Hotel, the festival completely honors 20th-century pop culture. The promenade transforms into a massive retro party featuring a major classic car show, vibrant vintage marketplaces, street theater, popup vinyl DJs, and crowds of people dressed up in immaculate period fashion from the 1920s to the 1990s.
